That First Night

That First Night

Dripping leaky faucets and old creaky floors,

Cobwebs in corners, book covers and doors.

Papers strewn carelessly, crumpled and torn,

Suit jacket on the floor, wrinkled and worn.

Flowers in vases, petals dried up and pale,

Wedding dress casually tossed aside with the veil.

“Mr. and Mrs. Lee” written neatly in black ink,

Wedding topper half perched on the edge of the sink.

Two old dogs snoring, having just been fed,

While the couple makes love in their new marriage bed.
