top 5 favorite fruits

from a person with synesthesia

Welcome! As a person with synesthesia (“mixing of senses”), I tend to attribute different fruits (and foods in general) to different moods, or “mood colors”. In a way, I feel that it dynamically extends my palate in a whimsical way. I experience food as one might experience watching a feature film; anticipating the build up, riding the climactic point, and relishing in the ending.

With that said, these are my top favorite fruits of all time:

1. Strawberry

Strawberry is my favorite fruit of all time. I love the actual fruit itself raw, cooked, baked or dried. I love it as a flavor for candy as well as the flavor for every sugary, sour-y thing I eat. While it might be obvious, the mood color is pink…simply because things that are strawberry-flavored tend to be pink or pinkish in color. Score: 10/10

2. Cherry

Cherry is my second favorite fruit solely for it’s use in flavored juices, pastries, candy, and popsicles. I don’t prefer the fruit by itself unless it is raw. Since many of the foods above only carry cherry as a standard “red” flavor, it has become my go-to. Score: 9/10 (for it’s dependability)

3. Pineapple

Pineapple is an underrated fruit for how versatile and diverse it is within food cuisine. I know it is good in things like smoothies (and NOT good on things like pizza). However, it was not until I expanded my palate that I began to devour delicious delicacies such as fish tacos al pastor, pineapple salsa, and even grilled pineapple drizzled with honey and very light sea salt (ok, I’ll stop haha). If it wasn’t for a harrowing disaster of a night involving too many piña coladas in my college dorm room, I would rate this fruit higher. Score: 8/10

4. Banana

Banana is the laid back cousin to the fashionably cool pineapple. Consistent and durable; what you see is what you get. I absolutely love bananas as a fruit (and it’s starchy half-sibling, plantain). HOWEVER, I CANNOT stand banana-flavored ANYTHING. It’s fresh, or nothing. I will live and die on that hill. Score: 6/10

5. Peach

Peach is unusual on the list. So unusual that I surprised myself! I have grown quite fond of peaches, both as a fruit and as a flavor. I tend to reach for peach rings, peach nectar for my sweet tea, and even peaches to use in salads and decorated on focaccia. Peaches have made a long way from being the slimy, sticky sweet bits in a can. I am proud of you peaches. 8/10

Very interesting concept, so what moods would you choose for tomatoes, eggplants, pumpkins, cucumbers, and peppers as they are all classed as fruits.

You raise a good point Brian. Here’s what I got!

Tomatoes: green (it gives me rooted, earthy vibes since it’s the basis for 75% of the stuff I eat lol.)
Pumpkins: copper (every time I see it in cuisine I go “oh wow that sounds delicious” but then never try it. Like shopping at Trader Joe’s.)
Cucumbers: green (same vibe as tomato. They’ve been married for 30+ years. Sometimes tomato cheats w/onion. Cucumber knows.)
Peppers: orange (Bell peppers are the reoccurring guest star to the show. Jalapeño/chili/poblano peppers are the special guests, but like the well-known celebrity special guest that everybody likes but get’s offed after a few seasons. Thai chili/Scotch Bonnet peppers are that acquaintance in a high school sitcom that ends up turning on you and dating the person you like after you told them you liked the person way before. For this reason, these peppers give the mood “scarlet”)

Let me know what you think of this!

      Ciao
